There’s no doubt the Chinese front is dominating the robot vacuum market here in the United States, with Dreame and Roborock, which are both owned by Xiaomi, leading the pack when it comes to popularity and sales. The two boasts several models, ranging from the entry-level models for budget buyers to the sophisticated and expensive big machines with all the industry’s bells and whistles.

While the two brands share a lot, there are clear-cut differences that should inform your purchase decision.

The difference between Dreame and Roborock is the cleaning performance, navigation, and mapping. Dreame offers the best vacuuming performance, especially on carpets, as it has higher suction, while Roborock is the best for mopping as it has been engineered with an advanced mopping system, Sonic Mopping Technology. 1. Dreametech D9 Max

Dreametech D9 Max
View on Amazon

You might be on a budget, so you want an affordable robot vacuum that won’t break the bank – the Dreametech D9 Max is your match. This is a versatile robot vacuum that combines a vacuum and mop function, so you won’t need to spend more money on a separate robot mop.

Under the hood, it packs a powerful motor that delivers up to 4,000Pa of suction and a specialized brush system for sweeping and agitating embedded dirt. The dirt is then sucked into the 570Ml bin, but unfortunately, you’ll have to empty the bin manually as there’s no automatic self-emptying which has become an industry standard.

When it comes to mopping, I’m afraid the D9 Max is not the very best as it has a basic mopping system ideal for handling those light messes, but when it comes to the tough, sticky messes, it kind of gets overwhelmed. But for light messes such as urine stains and wine spills, it does an excellent job. There’s an onboard 270Ml electric water tank with adjustable flows that can be set from the app.

On navigation, the D9 Max doesn’t have a camera but relies on a solid LiDAR navigation system to find its way around your house while avoiding obstacles. There’s no AI-based obstacle avoidance system, so expect it to hit a few obstacles here and there. On mapping, it creates and saves multiple maps of your house and allows for containment via No Go Zones.

2. Dreametech D10 Plus

Dreametech D10 Plus
View on Amazon

The D10 is a line of 2 models, the D10 and D10 PLus. So what sets them apart? The D10 doesn’t come with an automatic self-emptying station, while the D10 Plus is an automatic self-emptying robot vacuum as it comes with a base that houses the self-emptying components.

The base station has a large disposable bag that can hold dirt for up to 45 days, which is just fantastic as you’ll have more time for other chores and not emptying the bin now and then. After the bag is full, you’ll need to buy a new bag and fix it as required.

When it comes to cleaning performance, this is a 2-in-1 multi-surface vacuum cleaner. It can vacuum all hard floors and carpets and wipe fragile hard floors, including tile, vinyl, laminate, and so on. If you constantly deal with spills, the wet mop function will also come in handy, but just to mention, this one, too, is a basic mopping system, so don’t be over-ambitious when dealing with sticky messes.

On autonomy, it maintains the same 5,200mAh battery that offers 180 minutes of runtime and has auto recharge and resume capabilities, just like the D9 Max. The navigation system is also based on LiDAR, which is quite accurate even if there’s no real-time camera. It managed to avoid cables, shoes, socks, and other obstacles. Mapping is excellent as the robot creates and saves multiple maps and offers several cleaning customization options.

3. Dreametech L10s Ultra

Dreametech L10s Ultra
View on Amazon

If you want a mid-range robot vacuum with a good mix of features and affordability, you should consider the Dreame L10S Ultra, which is also a 2-in-1 vacuum cleaner with excellent vacuuming and mopping performance. The navigation and mapping have also been taken a notch higher, so you get value for every coin.

The L10S packs a powerful motor that puts up 5,300Pa and leverages a specialized brush for dirt lift-up. All the dirt is sucked into the onboard bin, and the good news is you don’t need to empty the bin now and then, as this is a self-emptying robot vacuum that can hold dirt for up to 60 days.

Instead of the basic mopping system, Dreame went for an advanced system that uses an electric tank and a mopping head with counter-rotating mopping pads for effective scrubbing. Even sticky and stubborn messes such as honey, cooking oil, and margarine are no match for this robot vacuum.

Autonomy has further been enhanced. While the 5,200mAh battery has been maintained, together with the LiDAR navigation, obstacle avoidance is greatly improved. The robot will not bump into obstacles like the D9 or D10, as there’s an AI Visual Sensor at the front. On mapping, the L10S Ultra is a smart mapping robot vacuum that creates and saves multiple maps and plans for efficient cleaning paths for entire level coverage.

4. Dreame L20 Ultra

Dreame L20 Ultra
View on Amazon

For those who are ready to splash some good money on a state-of-the-art robot vacuum, Dreametech has the Dreame L20 Ultra in the offing. This is the creme de la creme from the Chinese brand and improves on almost every aspect, from cleaning performance to autonomy and convenience.

To start, the L20 brings on board a beast performance as it can generate up to 7,000Pa when firing on all cylinders, something that makes it best for carpets, even thick carpets and area rugs. This robot can also pick up fine dust and large debris, including pet hair, without a problem. The L20, one of the latest models, is a self-emptying robot vacuum and can hold dirt for up to 72 days.

Mopping, too, is excellent courtesy of a new advanced mopping system. With DualScrub Mopping and MopExtend, you can be sure of clean floors without any streak marks, and importantly, the robot can autoempty and auto refill the robot’s clean water tank as the station has a larger reservoir for clean and dirty water. Your maintenance routine is also relieved as the robot can auto wash, rise, and auto dry the mopping pads.

To offer sufficient power for the extra features and extensive automation, the Dreame L20 Ultra comes with a larger 6,400mh lithium-ion battery, but the runtime remains 180 minutes. LiDAR Navigation and smart mapping with AI 3D Obstacle Avoidance are retained.

Best Roborock Robot Vacuums

Formerly a subsidiary of the larger Xiaomi, Roborock has been one of the most promising Chinese robot vacuum brands, boasting over a dozen models, from the cheap Xiaowa robot vacuums to high-end models. For this review, we have found the best matches for the DreameBots discussed above. These are:

1. Roborock Q5 Pro+

Roborock Q5 Pro+
View on Amazon

The Q5 Pro Plus is a good alternative for the Dreame D9 Max as it is an affordable robot vacuum that combines the mopping function, so you won’t need to spend more on a robot mop if you want the mopping function. It also packs a handful of cool features that make floor cleaning a buzz, not a nightmare, like when using a bucket and mop.

The Roborock Q5 Pro+ boasts excellent versatility as it can handle all hard floors, including tile, hardwood, vinyl, concrete, laminate, and so on. Besides hard floors, the 5,500 peak suction is enough to flush out dust and dirt from carpets. The DuoRoller brush, on the other hand, is effective at picking up dirt, including pet hair, with minimal tangling. The Q5 Pro is a self-emptying robot vacuum that can hold dirt for up to 7 weeks.

Regarding mopping, the Q5 Pro offers basic mopping just like the D9 Max, as it comes with a detachable 180ml water tank with the microfiber at the bottom. Water flow is not very efficient, and scrubbing isn’t as effective, but all the same, the mopping function is a worthy addition.

On autonomy, Roborock has equipped the Q5 with a 5,200mAh battery, which I find sufficient as it can run the robot for a cool 180 minutes. The navigation is based on PreciSense LiDAR Navigation, which is quite accurate but not in high-traffic rooms as there’s no obstacle avoidance mechanism. Last, on mapping, this robot is ideal for homes with multiple rooms and floors as it has room recognition and can save multiple maps.

2. Roborock Q8 Max+

Roborock Q8 Max+
View on Amazon

The Q8 Max+ is another best-selling model on Amazon, with plenty of positive reviews from verified buyers. It’s a mid-range model that won’t break the bank and still offers excellent versatility now that it can vacuum and mop and packs some of the bells and whistles from the Chinese brand.

To start, it is suitable for multisurface cleaning, so if you have a blend of hard floors, such as hardwood and tile, alongside carpets and area rugs, it fits the bill. The Q8 will also make life with your furry friends stress-free as it can deal with stubborn pet hairs, whether long or short.

Like the predecessor, the Q5 Series, it has a HyperForce motor that delivers 5,500Pa of suction when in beast mode, and suction can be adjusted manually or automatically (Carpet Boost). The DuoRoller brush picks up all kinds of dirt, from fine dust to large debris, such as popcorn and Cheerios. It’s also a self-emptying robot, so for 7 weeks, you can stay stress-free.

Perhaps the biggest addition to this robot is the obstacle avoidance feature that makes it the perfect purchase if you’ve got a high-traffic home. The Reactive Tech Obstacle Avoidance feature means your robot won’t be hitting headphones or trying to suck up cables as it recognizes obstacles with precision. Runtime is still the same, 180 minutes, and most of the smart features are available.

3. Roborock Q Revo

Roborock Q Revo
View on Amazon

For those who are willing to fork out a few more hundred bucks for an all-rounder, the Roborock Q Revo will suffice. This is a sophisticated robot vacuum and mop combo that has been designed for an almost hands-free operation. Much of the maintenance has been automated.

To start, it’s a self-emptying robot vacuum that sucks dirt from the onboard bin into the dustbag that is holed in the base station. The base station also has a clean water tank and a dirty water tank that replenishes the robot’s tank when mopping. Last is the automatic mop pads management system that automatically washes and raises the mopping pads and dries them all by itself.

On cleaning performance, the 5500Pa suction power and DuoRoller brush are very effective in dirt agitation and pickup. You can rely on this robot if you have any hard floors or carpets. Pet messes, including pet hair and kitty litter, aren’t spared either. On mopping, we again have a basic mopping system, but it is effective at handling those light messes.

Like the Q8, the Q Revo relies on a LiDAR Navigation that consists of sensors that detect obstacles and stairs alongside Reactive Obstacle Detection technology, which further enhances navigation as the robot can detect obstacles with precision and change route. For mapping, the Revo relies on the LidaR system plus a host of sophisticated algorithms to create and save multiple maps of your home.

4. Roborock S7 Max Ultra

Roborock S7 Max Ultra
View on Amazon

The S7 Max Ultra might not be the latest robot vacuum from the Chinese brand, but I felt it’s the best match for the Dreame L20 Ultra now that they retail at almost the same price points. It’s a fantastic robot vacuum that is inexpensive and comes fully loaded with all the industry’s leading features.

One of the best features of the S7 Max Ultra is the enhanced mopping performance. If you are looking for a heavy-duty robot vacuum and mop combo that can deal with the stuck-on stains, grime, and other stubborn messes, this will be the best bargain. Mopping is powered by Sonic Technology, which consists of a vibrating mopping head that beats up to 3,000 times a minute, eliminating all stubborn dirt. You also won’t have to worry about wetting carpets as it boasts Ultrasonic Carpet Detection and a Mop Lifting System dubbed VibraRise.

Regarding maintenance, the S7 Max Ultra will refill the clean water tank when necessary and get rid of the dirty water. The mopping system can also wash the mopping pads and dry them so you won’t have to.

Vacuuming performance is also exceptional courtesy of the 5,500Pa HyperForce suction and specialized brushroll that leaves nothing to chance, including pet hairs. The onboard bin is quite large, and besides, this is a self-emptying robot cleaner, so you won’t have to sweat the small stuff, emptying the onboard bin manually.

Dreame and Roborock Stripped Down: Similarities and Differences

In this segment, we’re going to see how the two brands stack up against each other by basing the comparison on some critical factors considered when buying robot vacuums. So, let’s get started.

1. Design and Aesthetics

ALT
A good robot vacuum cleaner should have a compact design that will allow it to reach those tight spaces, for example, under furniture. The station should also have a minimalistic design that won’t take much space between the sofa arm and the wall, under the side table, or any other preferred spot. Craftsmanship and aesthetics also matter.

As far as design and aesthetics are concerned, Dreametech and Roborock have done a great job. All their robot vacuums have a low profile design, so they can easily go under sofas, beds, and tables unrestricted and pass between tight spaces without getting stuck.

The build quality is also great, considering they have been built using high-grade materials so that they can withstand accidental falls and attacks from unfriendly pets.

2. Cleaning Orientation

In this era, it’s best to go for that versatile robot cleaner that can get the entire floor cleaning job done. That said, settle for nothing less than a 2-in-1 cleaner that can handle all surfaces, from hard floors and carpets.

So, what do the two brands offer here?

We’re glad Dreame and Roborock are a step ahead of the game, as they both offer robot vacuum and mop combos. All the models in this review can vacuum and mop simultaneously and are suitable for hard floors, including tile, hardwood, laminate, and marble, alongside low-pile and high-pile carpets. The brushrolls have also been designed with pet hair in mind and will hardly get jammed.

3. Cleaning Performance

This is perhaps the most important consideration when choosing between Dreame and Roborock. Which one offers the best cleaning performance?

Roborock
On mopping, there’s no doubt Roborock is the best choice. While the most advanced Dreame uses a basic mopping system, Roborocks, including the S7 Max Ultra, comes with Sonic Mopping Technology, which is more effective in cleaning sticky messes and embedded dirt and stains.

To prevent the robot from wetting carpets, Roborock has VibraRise technology that senses carpets and lifts the mopping head instantly.

4. Autonomy

As you may be aware, robot vacuums are autonomous cleaners that work independently, except for a few human intervention requirements. Under the hood, they pack sophisticated systems for navigation and mapping and a battery that powers the many electrical components under the hood.

Dreame and Roborock are well endowed when it comes to navigation as they are all LiDAR-based robot vacuums. They are equipped with sensors for obstacle and drop detection and a retractable bumper just in case the robot stumbles into an obstacle.

However, Roborock has the edge as it has far more advanced navigation systems. The S7 Max Ultra, for example, has Reactive Tech Obstacle Avoidance, so it will hardly hit obstacles, while the S6 Max has a camera for more accuracy. It’s worth noting that the DreameBot L10 and L20 also have advanced obstacle detection, so they are a good fit if you’ve got high-traffic rooms.

On mapping, we feel they are the same as both are smart mapping robot vacuums that create and save multiple maps and pack features such as targeted cleaning and boundary marking.

Last, on autonomy, the two brands are also at par. Most of the models from Dreame and Roborock use the 5,200mAh lithium-ion battery and have auto recharge and resume capabilities. But ultimately, Roborocks have the edge as they feature extras such as Top Up Charging and Off Peak Charging.

5. Smart Features and Convenience

Robot vacuums have come a long way, from the age of Electrolux Trilobite when robots had no smart or convenience features to the modern age where we have smart robot vacuums that can connect with other smart home systems. Obviously, you’re also looking for the best robot vacuum that comes with convenience features that turn floor cleaning from a tedious chore to a hobby.

As far as smart connectivity, we’re glad all the Dreame and Roborock vacuums support WiFi compatibility, facilitating mobile AO operation via their respective apps, and also, they can sync with voice assistants, including Alexa and Google Assistant and others. But just to note, Roborock has some fancy extras including surveillance for the models with a camera and inbuilt voice control that doesn’t require WiFi for operation.

Regarding convenience, the focus is largely on maintenance, and both brands are exceptional, considering they both have automatic self-emptying robot vacuums, so you won’t need to empty the bin manually. Dreame and Roborock mopping systems also allow for easy maintenance. Dreame L20 Ultra, for example, can autorefill the clean water tank, get rid of dirty water, wash the mopping pads, and dry them. This is the same case for the Roborock Q Revo and S7 Max Ultra.

Dreame vs. Roborock Buyer’s Guide

We’re almost coming to a close, but still, I understand that you might be at crossroads. In this section, we’re going to give you some tips to help you select the best robot vacuum, depending on your needs.

Best Overall: Dreame L20 Ultra vs Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra

Dreame L20 Ultra is the best overall model from the Dreame vacuums featured in this review, and it’s up against the S7 MaxV Ultra.

So, which is the best robot vacuum?

Well, Roborock S7 Max Ultra is the best choice for one reason: it offers excellent vacuuming and has an advanced mopping system that can deal with all kinds of sticky messes and stains.

Best For Hard Floors: Dreametech D9 Max vs Roborock Q5 Pro+

For hardwood floors, just a basic robot vacuum will do, so you don’t necessarily have to break the bank. That said, we front Dreametech D9 Max and Roborock Q5 Pro+ as the contenders.

To be honest, both vacuums are ideal for hard floors as they have excellent suction and a specialized brushroll that picks up all kinds of debris from hard floors, including tile, vinyl, hardwood, and so on. So, either option fits the bill.

Best For Carpets: Dreame L20 ULtra vs. Roborock Q Revo

The best robot vacuum for carpets should have monster suction to ensure all dirt, including fine dust, is flashed out of carpets. From the Dreametech and Roborock models in this review, the best options are the L20 Ultra and Q Revo.

Ultimately, I’d go for the Dreametech L20 Ultra as it delivers up to 7,000Pa while Roborock does 5,500Pa. But if you have carpets, consider Roborock as the VibraRise Mop Lift System guarantees that your carpets won’t get wet.

Best Vacuum and Mop Combo: Dreame L20 Ultra vs. Roborock S7 MAX Ultra

All the models in this review are 2-in-1 vacuum cleaners, so you don’t need a robot mop. But the big question is, which is the best vacmop? Is it Dreame or Roboock?

Without a doubt, Roborock S7 Max Ultra is the winner here as it comes with an advanced mopping system dubbed Sonic Mopping Technology, where the mopping pad vibrates up to 3,000 times per minute for effective mopping.
