Short Description
Robotic cleaners have proved their necessity in comfort autonomic house cleaning. On the market every day new models of robot vacuum cleaners with new features appear. Neato recently has presented new optimized models for middle size homes – Neato D8 and D9. These two models have an innovative D-shape body made famous by previous popular D7 and older models and wider brush roll that makes the vacuuming more effective on a carpet or a hard floor. Other numerous advantages are presented in comparison of Neato D8 vs D9 below.
Neato D8 vs D9: Face-to-Face Comparison
A unique D-shape design of both cleaners, Neato D8 and D9, allows to have up to 70% wider brush roll and correspondingly a cleaning path of 11 inches than any other vacuum robot cleaners. This shape ensures better cleaning of square corners and edges, as the cleaner can come significantly closer than round competitors.
There is no difference between Neato D8 vs D9 as both are excellent vacuum cleaners only.
Both vacuum cleaners have powerful suction power, but Neato D9 40% is more effective in dirt suction than the previous Neato model series, while Neato D8 is only 20%. So, Neato D9 provides ultra-performance in vacuum cleaning and is better than D8.
Neato D8 and D9 can climb only on low furniture or small steps. Sometimes it is better to set a no-go area for some antique furniture to prevent unnecessary robots' attempts to climb and clean the furniture legs.
The SLAM technology is the same for both cleaners are based on LIDAR, ensuring the creation of a map of your home faster than camera-based models. The LIDAR system allows robots to clean in the dark night. As these models have lasers, not cameras, no recording and transferring private information is possible.
The mapping system for both models D8 and D9 is also the same. A detailed map of the entire home using this LIDAR navigation system and installed sensors will be created during the first run; you can set no-go areas for personal cleaning in the smartphone application or the zones with more frequent cleaning during the week. Unfortunately, D8 can clean only one floor, while D9 can manage multiple floor plans. Also, D9 creates more delicate mapping with more logical patterns.
Neato D8 has a high-performance filter that is able to keep 99% of dirt allergens with a size up to 10 microns. While ultra-performance filter of Neato D9 can keep up to 99.5% of dirt and allergens of the same size, as it has an additional reusable mesh cover. Even though both filters have similar characteristics similar to other robotic cleaners, Neato D9 filter is working longer and better.
Neato D8 and D9 are equipped with two brushes – the main brush with a size of 11 inches (more significant than other round robot cleaners have) and a side brush. The spiral combo main brush of Neato D8 excellent works on all floors, including hardwood, carpets, and tiles. Helix Main Brush of D9 is better, as it is from a new generation brush from Neato that works perfectly for the same types of floors, but that can turn on 140 degrees and works 50% more silently on the hardwood floor. A rotating side brush is installed with a magnet only on one side and looks similar to other robotic cleaners. Each cleaner has in the package a brush cleaning tool.
Even though D8 and D9 do not have automatic dirt disposal, their equal dustbin large size of 0.7 l allows less frequent emptying. The dustbin is located on the top, and its size is one the biggest on the market for robotic cleaners. But unfortunately, the dustbin is not equipped with a signal when it is full.
Neato D8 vs D9 has twice less working battery life. But when the battery is low (the green symbol on the cleaner top becomes yellow), both cleaners are programmed to return to the charging station and resume from the same place. D8 and D9 have two modes – turbo and eco; in eco mode, the battery life is maximum; in turbo it is twice shorter. Charging time for D8 is about 2 hours, for D9 – 3.5 hours.
These Neato robotic cleaners have the same automation and smart features. A start-up button is located on the top of a robot. Still, full functionality with remote start-up, change of suction mode, scheduling, and interactive mapping functions can be executed via a smartphone application or smart home system with voice control. The smartphone app works equally well for IOS and Android.
Neato D8 comes with:
- The D8 intelligent robot cleaner itself,
- a slimline charging base with a 6-inch cord to the socket,
- one installed and two extra high-filters,
- already installed the main spiral brush and a one side brush,
- a brush cleaning tool,
- and installed 2100 mAH battery.
Neato D9 comes with:
- The D9 intelligent robot cleaner itself,
- a slimline charging base with a 6-inch cord to the socket,
- one installed and two extra ultra-filters,
- already installed the main helix brush and a one side brush,
- a brush cleaning tool,
- and installed a 4200 mAH battery.
Testing:
Vacuuming hard floor
Neato D8 and D9 showed excellent hard floor and carpet cleaning results. D9 results were slightly higher due to better suction power and a more precise mapping system. For complicated objects like kitty litter, a turbo mode was used for both models.

Summary
It is evident that both cleaners have shown excellent cleaning results with similar characteristics. The main advantages of the D9 model in comparison to the D8 are twice longer battery life, upgraded mapping function, advanced multi-surface brush, and an ultra-performance filter. But suppose these parameters are not so essential for you to choose based only on cleaning and control functions with the possibility to integrate the cleaner into Smart Home.
In that case, the D8 model will be good for you and is also almost twice cheaper. Anyway, D8 and D9 are perfect helpers in home cleaning.
