Key differences — Dreame L40 Ultra and X40 Ultra

  • Raw power: X40 Ultra has 12,000 Pa max suction; L40 Ultra tops out at 11,000 Pa. In independent tests, X40’s airflow/suction led noticeably.
  • Dock cleaning temp: X40 washes mops with hotter water (≈70 °C/158 °F) vs ≈60 °C/140 °F on L40; both dry with warm air.
  • Edge/corner reach: Both support MopExtend™ RoboSwing and an extendable, liftable side brush for wall edges and under-sofa gaps; X40 markets “SideReach™” more aggressively, but the mechanisms are similar in practice.
  • Navigation/avoidance: Both use AI RGB camera + 3D structured light with stain/dirt detection; L40’s sensor suite is confirmed in lab reviews.
  • Hardware tweaks: X40 claims 22 mm obstacle crossing (vs 20 mm on L40) and a 300 mL dust box (L40 350 mL). Battery is 6,400 mAh on both.
  • Positioning & pricing: X40 is the flagship (often priced higher but sees deep promos); L40 is the “value flagship” with a very similar feature set and frequent discounts. Recent deals showed X40 at $699 (Prime Day) and L40 at $599 (Memorial Day).

Methodology — Mini benchmarks

What this table shows: a compact comparison of four practical metrics collected from external sources (lab tests, official specs, owner evidence). Values are aggregated (not our lab), with transparent links.

Metrics & definitions

  • Edge reach (cm): closest distance from cleaning edge to wall/baseboard on a straight pass.
  • Threshold climb (mm): max height consistently surmounted (≥2 of 3 attempts).
  • Mop wash temp (°C): approximate hot-water temperature used by the dock during auto-wash.
  • Suction / airflow (Pa): manufacturer-stated max suction; if airflow (CFM) is reported, a Pa proxy is used for ranking only.

Aggregation

  • Weighting: official specs (w=1.0); reputable lab tests/reviews (w=0.8–1.0); owner reports with photo/video (w=0.5–0.7); single anecdotal mentions (w=0.3–0.5).
  • Estimator: weighted median (robust to outliers). With 1 source only → Low confidence.
  • Normalization: units converted to mm/cm/°C; airflow→Pa proxy for relative ranking, not absolute cross-brand claims.

Confidence badges

  • High: ≥3 independent sources and low variance;
  • Med: 2 sources or moderate variance;
  • Low: 1 source or conflicting data.

Disclaimer: firmware/hardware revisions and retailer data can change performance over time. Follow source links for full context.

I’ve been using the Dreame L40 Ultra for a few months now, and overall, it’s been a fantastic addition to my cleaning routine. With pets at home, hair and dirt pile up quickly, but this vacuum manages to keep things spotless. I love how quiet it is—even the charging station operates softly. The customization options through the app are impressive, allowing me to schedule and adjust cleanings exactly as I need. Plus, the built-in camera is a fun bonus; I didn’t expect to use it much, but it’s handy for checking in on my cat!

That said, it’s not without its quirks. The AI and navigation software feel a bit unfinished at times; for instance, it sometimes struggles to go under low furniture or leaves streaks on the base after a run. The water container also could be easier to handle—filling it requires a steady hand! Despite these minor issues, I’m overall very happy with this vacuum, and it’s made keeping my home clean much easier.

Pros

  • Quiet operation, even in charging
  • Excellent pet hair and dirt cleaning
  • Highly customizable app settings
  • Seamless integration with smart home.
  • Built-in camera for pet monitoring.
  • High-tech features meet daily needs.

Cons

  • Software needs improvement.
  • Bumps into some furniture.
  • Water container design is tricky.

The Dreame X40 Ultra is a solid upgrade, especially for those familiar with models like the Roborock S7 Ultra MaxV. It excels at mopping and navigating around obstacles, while the large water tanks and sewage connection add convenience. However, the automatic stain cleaning feature underdelivers, as it fails to scrub tough spots as expected. Additionally, the vacuum sometimes scatters small debris rather than picking it up. Despite these flaws, it remains a reliable flagship option for those seeking strong mopping performance and smart navigation. Overall, it’s a good choice, but expectations for a "flagship" experience could be higher.

Pros

  • Effective Mopping and Navigation
  • User-Friendly App
  • Large Water Tanks

Cons

  • Stain Cleaning Issues
  • Debris Scattering

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between no-go zones and no-mop zones? Where to set them in Dreame robots?

All no-go and no-mop zones are set in the Dreame smartphone application (recently, it was renamed as the Xiaomi app) and are part of the map customization capabilities. A no-go zone means that robots can enter this zone (could be set in a pet bowl area or kid’s playground); the no-mop zone is set to prevent robots from mopping a specific area (sensitive carpets or fragile floor).

Does the weight of the robot matter?

If you do not plan to carry the robot frequently by yourself, the weight of the robot will not impact the cleaning efficiency. But if you have several stores for cleaning by one robotic cleaner, you need to carry it from one floor to another for charging and self-cleaning to the base station. In this case, the weight of the robot matters. Nevertheless, the weight of robots of different brands with similar functionality does not differ much.

How does Dreame X40 Ultra perform odor control?

The Dreame X40 Ultra comes with a dust box and dust bag that safely trap all collected dirt and dust. Moreover, it effectively cleans washing pads and washboards using hot water to reduce stain residues and remove all bacterial odors. The advanced color sensing of the used water helps to inform the owner about the necessity of cleaning the dirty water tank.

What model is recommended for pet owners? L40 or X40 Ultra?

The functionality of both robots and their base station is close to each other. Both edge brushes and main brushes of L40 and X40 have an anti-tangle feature with a plastic cut to remove all hair. The quick-rotating brush directs all debris, including hair, into the suction port. In the app, you can set no-go or no-mop zones on the special pet’s zone or stay connected with them using real-time voice control and the robot's video camera.

Can Dreame robots understand voice commands? How do you understand which commands to use?

Voice control using Alexa, Siri, or Google Home-compatible devices is available for Dreame models L40 and X40 Ultra. The list of commands is in the manual.
