S.A.M.M.
S.A.M.M. (Servo Actuated Mechanical Man) is my Biped humanoid robot, believed to be the first American made "Humanoid". I got tired of seeing the Japanese building so many bipeds and almost every country was at least working on them, but for some reason America didn't seem to have an interest in building them.
So I set out to build my own to prove to myself that if they can do it, we can do it. It was my hope to inspire others in America to start working on Bipeds and frankly I was tired of hearing things like "I wish I had a good CAD program to design a walking robot" or "If I had the right tools, I'd build a biped" so I set out to prove that it could be done with napkin type drawings and common inexpensive shop tools.
S.A.M.M. is made from sheets of acrylic plastic that can be found at any sign shop. Designed, layed out, and tested with cerial box cardboard, and finally cut from the plastic using a small drill press, a scroll saw, a bandsaw, and a belt sander and bonded together with acetone.
No more excuses! the parts can be obtained a few at a time so your pocket book doesn't shrivel up, and a person could build a joint a week in their spare time... So what are you waiting for, robots will rule the world someday, do you want them ALL to be Japanese?

This is inspiring indeed! I
This is inspiring indeed! I do have an interest in humanoid robots, but my main interest in biped robots lies in other forms of mechanical creatures. For instance, I'm hoping to one day build a biped dinosaur pet-like robot like Ornitholestes or Dromeosaurus (I've always thought it would be fun to have a pet tame velociraptor. You could put your head in its mouth and it wouldn't try to eat you). I want to build one of my own, one that moves and walks closer to life, and not use a kit or a petty toy.
You've fueled my motivation! Anyone and any country can do anything with the right dedication, passion, and good intention! Thanks.
Are there any tutorials or
Are there any tutorials or resources you used when making this robot? Such as how you bonded the plastic.
Burento, The plastic I used
Burento,
The plastic I used is called Acrylic, it's commonly used for lighted signs. The only way to bond it is through a chemical melting process which is done with Acitone or for best results, a product called weldon #40 which is a bit thicker than Acitone and doesn't make such a mess.
I'm not sure I would choose Acrylic again if I were to start this project from scratch. It does break easily. I think I would choose aluminum and go with the stronger digital servos.

A greater philosophy then
A greater philosophy then most! What you observe is all to obvious, just like what I've encountered (ONLY IN THE USA), not one major movie-land Robotics Studio (re: I.L.M. or Stan Winston Studios et al) what's to fund a "GOOD" Robot, but they jump on ANYTHING evil! Thus, promoting "DOOM & GLOOM" for any future. Then, in addressing the U.S. Government (thanks to political LIES of needing "INNOVATORS", all I find any interest in is for DARPA & Dept of Defense trash of more hate & distrust.) You are displaying a good start in the right direction ONLY Pacific rim countries federally fund, like Japan, Korea & China. Ever Europe has a European (Robot) Consortium few of those are evil or hateful. But NOT The USA! The trick is to get Americans (Need I say: WHITE HOUSE) to recognize the value of robots in the home to save MILLIONS OF DOLLARS vs Nursing Home Warehousing of True Experience when old folks can stay in own home with robot help. Sorry, but "Baby-Boomers" aren't getting younger and miniturizing the screens of Electronics is only Great for kids!
That's really a very nice
That's really a very nice design and construction job -- making the most from the least. Congrats.
