Springy Thingy

See all images in the Gallery
Category: Rolling
Cost: $1000

In 1999 I decided I wanted to build a robot for Burning Man. This was the beginning of “Springy Thingy”. Initially Springy was strictly a computer based robot. I would follow behind her with a joystick. In its autonomous mode it utilized David Heiserman’s “Alpha level machine intelligence” theory. Eventually I added radio control and Stamp based autonomous behavior where it would track an IR beacon. I would basically have her follow the beacon until she detected it in her gripper and then grasp it and stop; kind of like a dog looking for and finding its chew-toy.

Components:
  • Stamp BS2p40
  • Mini-ITX
  • QuickCam
  • Cheesy Gripper Arm
  • Fiberoptic Hair (very pretty)

"How to Build Your Own

"How to Build Your Own Self-Programming Robot" was the first book I bought on robot building. After 5 years of trying to build the 8085 microcontroller-based robot from scratch. I finally applied the Alpha Level Machine Intelligence theory to a store-bought computer with a relay/IO card. It would basically react with random motion patterns whenever it encountered a stall condition. "Spingy" was my third robot that used this algorithm. Some day I will apply levels Beta and Gamma... some day. :-) All of David Heiserman's books were and still are an inspiration to me.

I actually read some of that

I actually read some of that book several years ago! It seemed quite unique and inspirational indeed.

I believe many robots now days are self-programming, such as Pleo the dinosaur. One of my projects is to implement self-programming in a robotic pet baby velociraptor I may try building from off the shelf parts. I know nothing about how to do it using conventional computers, however, and I only read partial way into David Heisserman's book as I wanted to focus on the basics of robotics back then.

I used a Mini-ITX board but

I used a Mini-ITX board but now Springy's Stamp-based (plus RC). Her basic program has her following and grasping a 38KHz Pringles can. :-) The "machine intelligence" theory is from David Heiserman's "How to Build Your Own Self-Programming Robot" (TAB 1979). You can buy it on Amazon. Thanks!

You applied David Heiserman's

You applied David Heiserman's "How to Build Your Own Self-Programming Robot" (TAB 1979) book to your current robot?  I have this book, but don't see many ways to apply the knowledge from it in todays terms.  What was the part of David's book that inspired you to apply it to Springy Thing?

Looks very cool! What mini

Looks very cool!

What mini ITX board did you use? What's your experience with them? I'm thinking about giving my robot, NINA, a mini ITX.

I'm interested to learn more about this alpha level intelligence theory. What sort of robot behaviors encompass that? Perhaps I'll stop by the library and see if I can find anything.
